Irsk setter
MENTALITET
Den findes i to varianter, som i dag regnes for to selvstændige racer.

Irish Setter Basics
Nothing quite rivals the familiar coat and distinctive bronze color of an Irish Setter, which is partially why this famous breed of dog has been so recognizable throughout the years. From presidents to everyday people, everyone seems to have had an Irish Setter as a pet, and it’s no wonder why: these noble, friendly dogs can make not only versatile athletes, but comfortable companions on a daily basis.
In Gaelic, these Irish Setters can often be known as red setters thanks to their aforementioned bronze color. Where does the word “Setter” come from? A setter is a type of dog that searches for game by smelling for it, helping in the hunt (opposed to other hunting breeds such as pointers and retrievers).
Does an Irish Setter make sense as a pet for you and your family? You’ll have to read on to find out, but it’s our guess that you’ll find a lot about the Irish Setter to really enjoy no matter what kind of breeds you normally gravitate toward.
The Irish Setter searches for game by smelling for it, helping in the hunt.
Although there are some early mentions of Setter-like dogs earlier on, it’s probably the case that the Setter breed began in 17th to 18th century Europe. From this point, as interest in dogs widened as well as its availability, individual breeds began to branch out into different subsets which would later become its own breeds. By the 19th century, the Setters in Ireland had begun to take on their own unique look that we now recognize today as the Irish Setter.
Obviously, these Irish Setters were bred for hunting and by around 1886, the formal standards for the breed of Irish Setters were established. Other colors of Irish Setter were said to have existed around this time, suggesting that the Irish needed a brightly colored or at least solidly colored dog in their hunting activities.
Pedigree
Descending from the Setter group, the Irish Setter has a solid pedigree while having strongly carved out its own identity.
In the 1800s, Irish Setters were brought to the United States where they would go on to establish a strong pedigree as well. Irish Setters have been pets to presidents like Harry Truman and Richard Nixon, and have steadily gained a reputation as a quality show dog with athletic features and keen instincts.
Food / Diet
Irish Setters can be active and require a fairly healthy and steady diet of meats and other foods rich in nutrients like vegetables. As with many dogs, it’s best to simply avoid feeding your Irish Setter processed foods altogether.
Irish Setters have a strong and healthy disposition
Highly responsive to training, Irish Setters work well in a group environment as one of the keen instruments in a hunting party. As a Setter, and Irish Setter has instincts to sniff out prey and discover it for the hunters in your group.
Irish Setters have a strong and healthy disposition – they are friendly toward adults and children alike and this makes them excellent and very trainable dogs.
An Irish Setter should weigh around 65-75 pounds in a male and 55-65 pounds in a female. Irish Setters will have plenty of muscle while still looking lean. It’s easy to tell when an Irish Setter has put on too much weight and efforts should be taken to ensure that the Setter doesn’t become habitually overweight.
Temperament / Behavior
Irish Setters are seen as having a friendly disposition that makes them ideal for families. Irish Setters are large but will get along with children and while they can intimidate a few of your house guests, they rarely act overly territorial or aggressive. An Irish Setter that has been raised in a balanced environment should have plenty of energy and confidence without it ever spilling over into aggression or anxiety.
Irish Setters could be classified as animated and outgoing, which makes them perfect playmates for children who enjoy the outdoors. As long as you keep your Irish Setter exercising, you’ll be able to enjoy a stable personality that is well-suited for families.
Common Health Problems
Another reason Irish Setters tend to make excellent pets is that they tend to be a healthier breed, which means less veterinarian bills over the years. Irish Setters are susceptible to a number of typical dog problems like hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy, which causes blindness. But if you treat your Irish Setter right and give it a balanced diet with plenty of exercise, an Irish Setter can enjoy a high quality of life for a relatively long period of time.
Life Expectancy
At a life expectancy of some 11-15 years, Irish Setters can get quite old for dogs, especially dogs of its size.
Exercise Requirements
Irish Setters can have a high tolerance for exercise so it’s important that they get outdoors and revel in their instincts on a habitual basis. With plenty of lean weight, Irish Setters will be agile and capable of plenty of running, so don’t go easy on them all the time. Get an Irish Setter feeling like a part of a team and it will feel like it’s in its natural environment.
Irish Setters are seen as having a friendly disposition that makes them ideal for families.
Says the American Kennel Club: “One of the most distinctive Sporting breeds, the mahogany red Irish Setter is an active, aristocratic bird dog.”
The Irish Setter’s deep reddish distinctive coat can be characterized as long and silky, and you’ll want to make sure it’s properly groomed in order to ensure your animal is comfortable and healthy.
Raising an Irish Setter properly from a puppy should require a good amount of knowledge about the breed. For example, it’s important that you teach your Irish Setter not to jump up on laps – they certainly grow too large to be a lap dog. Establishing strong boundaries and expectations early on with Irish Setters is important – they will reward you with a god personality and a strong sense of loyalty.

"Bama the Irish Setter at 11 months old loves the water, going for long walks, going with us when we ride bikes, swimming , riding in the car and truck, but most of all going with me when I ride the horses!! We moved the horses back home in their new fence, so I take Bama a lot with me! He is so good with the photograph thing! I'm a photographer so he makes taking pictures of him fun!! He loves to go to PetCo and PetSmart too! He loves butter cream icing, shrimp tails, dog cookies, raw hide chewies and birthday cake! And of course he hates to be scolded. He has gotten better when we leave him in the bus truck or car; he knows that we are coming back. This breed of dog is truly a smart one! If you have the time and are active with the outdoors this breed might be right for you!!"

Description
The Irish Setter is an active bird dog. The long, lean head is at least double the width between the ears than it is in length. When viewed from the front the skull is oval and when viewed from the top it is slightly domed. The body is slightly longer than tall. The muzzle is moderately deep with a distinct stop. The teeth meet in a scissors bite. The nose is either black or brown with wide open nostrils. The medium-sized eyes are almond shaped, set somewhat wide apart and are dark to medium brown in color. The triangular, low-set ears are thin and hang close to the head. The front legs are straight and the feet are rather small with arched toes. The long tail almost reaches the hock, is thicker at the base, tapering to a point. The coat is short and fine on the head and the front side of the legs and medium in length on other parts of the body. There is an even longer feathering on the ears, back of the legs, belly and brisket, extending to the chest. Coat colors include mahogany to a rich chestnut red. There is no black, but may be a small amount of white on the chest, throat, toes and sometimes a thin centered streak on the top of the head. Young dogs can sometimes have a silvery-gray color behind the ears and legs that usually disappears as the dog grows.
Temperament
Irish Setters are energetic, intelligent, affectionate, loving, high-spirited and full of energy. They have no guarding instincts, get along with other pets and are good with children. This breed can be reckless and high-strung if it does not receive the proper amount of mental and physical exercise and may become destructive and hard to manage. Impulsive, with an independent spirit, they are sensitive to the tone of one's voice and will not listen if they sense that they are stronger minded than their owner, however they will also not respond well to harsh discipline. Owners need to be calm, yet possess an air of natural authority, being firm, confident and consistent, giving the dogs clear rules they must follow and sticking to them. Meek or passive owners or owners who do not provide enough exercise will find them to be difficult to train. Given firm handling and plenty of exercise, these dogs can be a joy to own. Start firm training early in life as it is easier to prevent behavior issues than it is to fix them once they start happening. Do not let this dog jump on humans, even as a small puppy. Teach them to heel on a lead and to let humans pass in and out gate and doorways before them. Relatively easily to housebreak. There are two types, field lines and show lines (bench). Field types are bred for hunting and field trial work and are generally somewhat smaller with shorter coats. The bench type is bred for conformation shows. Both types are energetic and need daily exercise, but field lines have a higher energy level and need even more exercise. The dominancy level in this breed varies even within the same litter. If you are not the type of person who can display a natural air of calm, but firm authority, then be sure to choose a pup that is more submissive. The temperament of both show and field lines vary widely, depending upon how the owners treat the dog and how much and what type of exercise they provide. The Irish Setter is used for all types of hunting. It is extremely swift, with an excellent sense of smell and is hardy over any terrain and in any climate, working well even in wetlands.
Height, Weight
Height: Males 26 - 28 inches (66 - 71 cm) Females 24 - 26 inches (61 - 66 cm)
Weight: Males 65 - 75 pounds (29 - 34 kg) Females 55 - 65 pounds (25 - 29 kg)
Health Problems
This breed tends to bloat. It may be wise to feed 2 or 3 small meals a day instead of one big one. Prone to epilepsy, severe skin allergies, elbow and hip dysplasia, hypothyroidism and eye problems such as PRA, autoimmune disease. Watch for ear infections and inflammation.
Living Conditions
The Irish Setter is not recommended for apartment life unless the owners are active daily joggers or bikers and plan on taking the dog along with them. This breed does best with a large yard.
All setters need a daily long, brisk walk or jog or they will become restless and difficult to manage. Do not allow the dog to walk in front of the person holding the lead. The dog must be made to heel beside or behind the human, as in the dog's mind, the leader goes first and that leader must be the human. In addition, they will also enjoy running free in the safety of a fenced yard.
Life Expectancy
About 11-15 years.
Litter Size
Often very large litters. About 8 to 12 puppies, sometimes more
Daily brushing and combing of the soft, flat, medium-length coat is all that is required to keep it in excellent condition. Keep it free from burrs and tangles, brushing extra when the coat is shedding. Bathe and dry shampoo only when necessary. This breed is an average shedder.
The Irish Setter was developed from mixing the Irish Terrier, Irish Water Spaniel, English Setter, Pointer and the Gordon Setter. It was originally called the Irish Red Setter in the United States. At one time the Irish Setter was a red and white dog with shorter legs than today's breed. The shorter legs were most likely bred in to help the dogs "set" the game. They would crouch down low near the bird so that the hunter could walk over and toss a net over the prey and the dog. In the 19th century selective breeding produced a dog with a pure chestnut red coat and the white was bred out of the breed. It is probably older than the English Setter. The English and Irish Setters are both ancestors of the Spanish Pointer. The Irish Setter is an all-purpose hunting dog, both a pointer and retriever in all types of terrains. It is especially good for hunting game birds. It has an excellent nose and is very fast. When the Irish Setter finds his game he runs quickly back and forth in front of the hunter in order to alert him. Over the years many breeders have started breeding more for looks rather than the dog’s hunting ability. The Irish Setter's talents include hunting, tracking, retrieving, pointing, watchdog, agility and competitive obedience.

George the Irish Setter as a puppy at 2 months old—"This is George, my two-month-old Irish Setter puppy! I just got him today and he already seems to love his new home! He already knows how to sit and we're still working on the down command. George got his name by my family voting for what we wanted to name him. The names we had were George, Seamus, Champ and Bama. George got the most votes so that’s what we named him! George's friends are my German Shepherd named Jude and Himalayan cat named Mr. Jinx. I can't wait to see George grow up to be a healthy adult dog. :)"
"This is my Irish Setter puppy Ala at 6 weeks old. Her nickname is Ala B. Her likes are spending time with me, going places with me and playing with her friend Bama (an adult Irish Setter), pointing at things, walking up and down stairs, running and riding in the truck. Her dislike is being scolded. Her favorite things to eat are her food (Royal Canine), dog cookies from PetCo's treat bar, anything she can get in her mouth to chew on, rib bones to chew on for dogs and pig ear chewies. Her favorite toys are a stuffed squeaky cow toy, tennis balls, a squeaky stuffed horse and pretty much anything that she can get her mouth on! She is a sweetie! She is going to be a beautiful dog when she grows up!"

Je frьher du damit beginnst, umso besser.

Irish Wolfhound
Big? That’s putting it mildly. The Irish Wolfhound is an immense, muscular hound. A fully mature male might stand 32 to 34 inches at the shoulder and weigh 120 pounds. This tallest of all AKC breeds is nonetheless gracefully built along classic Greyhound lines and can cover lots of ground quickly when at full gallop. The hard, medium-length coat comes in many colors, including white, gray, brindle, red, black, and fawn.

General Appearance
Of great size and commanding appearance, the Irish Wolfhound is remarkable in combining power and swiftness with keen sight. The largest and tallest of the galloping hounds, in general type he is a rough-coated, Greyhound-like breed; very muscular, strong though gracefully built; movements easy and active; head and neck carried high, the tail carried with an upward sweep with a slight curve towards the extremity. The minimum height and weight of dogs should be 32 inches and 120 pounds; of bitches, 30 inches and 105 pounds; these to apply only to hounds over 18 months of age. Anything below this should be debarred from competition. Great size, including height at shoulder and proportionate length of body, is the desideratum to be aimed at, and it is desired to firmly establish a race that shall average from 32 to 34 inches in dogs, showing the requisite power, activity, courage and symmetry.
Long, the frontal bones of the forehead very slightly raised and very little indentation between the eyes.Skull, not too broad. Muzzle, long and moderately pointed. Ears, small and Greyhound-like in carriage.
Neck: Rather long, very strong and muscular, well arched, without dewlap or loose skin about the throat. Chest: Very deep. Breast, wide. Back: Rather long than short. Loins arched.
Forequarters
Shoulders, muscular, giving breadth of chest, set sloping. Elbows well under, neither turned inwards nor outwards. Forearm muscular, and the whole leg strong and quite straight.
Rough and hard on body, legs and head; especially wiry and long over eyes and underjaw.
Hindquarters
Muscular thighs and second thigh long and strong as in the Greyhound, and hocks well let down and turning neither in nor out. Feet are moderately large and round, neither turned inwards nor outwards. Toes, well arched and closed. Nails, very strong and curved.
Irish WolfhoundCare
Good nutrition for the Irish Wolfhound is very important from puppyhood to his senior years.
The breed's harsh, natural coat requires regular brushing.
Although now primarily a family companion, the Irish Wolfhound will still instinctively give chase to fleeing prey.
Irish Wolfhounds are generally a healthy breed.

Outcross between irish setter and irish red and white setter planned spring 2018
For the first time a planned outcross-breeding between irish setter and irish red and white setter are taking place in Norway. The candidates for this first generation outcross are irish setter Skogrypas Black Hawk (sire) and irish red and white setter Alvertoppens Ice-T (bitch).
The background for this mating is to answer the call from the Irish Kennel Club to breeders worldwide to participate in the International Outcross Programme, in order to increase the genetic diversity in the gene pool of the irish red and white setter. The the formal approval of this outcross mating from the Outcross Committee in the Irish Kennel Club dated 21th november 2017 can be read here: Outcross Approval

Our opinion about this outcross
We are breeding irish red and white setters for hunting and field trials as our main objective. Ice-T was the first irws in Norway to accomplish 1st UK (youth field trial < 2 yrs). In show she has achieved Excellent five times and CERT three times. In her litter five out of 10 dogs have achieved field trial results in Norway and Sweden. Ice-T have one litter (9 pups) with Craigrua Dahy(X1) in 2015. Two of these pups have achieved 1st UK in field trial, another pup is awarded in retrieving-trials. This is the first time two irws from the same litter achieve 1st UK in field trial in Norway, and the first time an irws is awarded in retrieving trials in Norway.
The irish setter Black Hawk is a strong candidate with very interesting pedigree going back to old norwegian, danish, russian and irish lines. Black Hawk has 2 x 1st UK in field trial, and an 2nd in Open Class. Two other littermates also achieved 1st UK.
He is a hard working dog with great temper. In show he twice has achieved Excellent and CERT.
We are motivated to do an outcross because we see the need for new genetic input if the irws are to achieve success for generations to come as a healthy working dog.
The pups will be registered in the Norwegian Kennel Club (NKK) according to the rules & regulations in the Outcross Programme. The will be marked with (X1) in the registration number. The NKK is a member of FCI, and the pups will be issued an official FCI Pedigree Certificate from the Norwegian Kennel Club (NKK – member of FCI). Here you can see the members of FCI around the world.
Practical information
Ice-T got into heat in the beginning of february 2018. If all are successful there will be pups born in the end of April. These will be ready for pick-up eight weeks later, medio June.
All pups are delivered microchipped with puppy insurance, NKK-registration (FCI pedigree certificate), vaccinated, wormed and with a general health certificate (for puppies).
We live in Bergen, Norway. The nearest international airport with veterinarian for export of animals is in Oslo (OSL). We can help our buyers and send from there, Oslo is located approximately 500 miles from Bergen but we can travel there by car. There is also a car ferry going from Bergen to Hirtshals, Denmark.
We have a kennel and can keep puppies for a longer period, in case of special export-rules regarding vaccination etc. We will charge a modest extra cost per week to cover our expences in such matter. Standard pick-up-date is when the pups are 8 weeks old.
If there are any questions please contact us. We are available via e-mail 24/7, and via phone +47 41 47 10 19 (Merete) or +47 90 98 14 14 (Thomas) after 4 pm during weekdays and anytime in the weekends. We live in CEST +1 timezone (Oslo/Berlin). You can check our local time here.
We ask all interested buyers to please fill out the form located on this page. You will then keep you updated on this litter.

(Sitat Kim Bellamy, avlskonsulent/veterinær i NKK, Hundesport Nr 3-17 s. 20)
Praktisk informasjon

Put on the computer what the public asks for, not everything about the US.
I asked for a total medal count. I have been looking for 20 minutes and still cannot find it.
I also asked for a specific medal count for a specific country and got a history of when they first started to compete in the Olympics. I asked for a medal count for 2018, as of today,
not a history of that country.
You don't even accept what I have asked.

Irish Water Spaniel
This tallest of AKC spaniels, standing 21 to 24 inches at the shoulder and weighing 55 to 65 pounds, straddles the line between “medium” and “large” dogs on our scale of size. Among its distinguishing characteristics are a crisply curled, liver-colored, waterproof coat; a tapered “rat tail”; and a cleanly chiseled head crowned with a topknot of long, loose curls. General Appearance
That of a smart, upstanding, strongly built moderate gundog bred for all types of shooting, especially for water-fowling. Great intelligence is combined with rugged endurance and a bold, dashing eagerness of temperament. Distinguishing characteristics are a topknot of long, loose curls and a body covered with a dense, crisply curled liver colored coat contrasted by a smooth face and a smooth "rat" tail.
The head is cleanly chiseled. Hair on the face is short and smooth except for a beard of long, loose curls growing at the back of the lower jaw which may continue up the side of the face as sideburns.Topknot: A characteristic of the breed, the topknot consists of long, loose curls covering the skull and falling down over the top of the ears and occiput. The contrast between the smooth face and the topknot is evident in a well-defined peak between the eyes. The topknot, a breed characteristic, should not be trimmed in an exaggerated or excessive manner. Eyes: Set almost flush, the eyes are comparatively small and almond shaped with tight eyelids. The color is a warm tone of medium to dark brown, dark amber but never yellow. The expression is keenly alert, intelligent, direct and quizzical. Ears: Long, lobular, set low, hanging close to the head and abundantly covered with long loose curls of hair.
The neck is long, arching, strong and muscular and is smoothly set into cleanly sloping shoulders. Topline: The rear is equal to or slightly higher than the front never descending or showing sag or roach. Back: Strong, broad and level. Body: Medium length. The ribs are carried well back and so well sprung behind the shoulders as to give a barrel shape. The chest is deep with a brisket extending to the elbows. The loin is short, wide, muscular, and deep so it does not give a tucked-up appearance.
Forequarters
The entire front gives the impression of strength without heaviness. The forechest should be moderate. Shoulders are sloping and moderately laid back, clean and powerful. The upper arms are approximately the length of the shoulder blades with clean elbows set close to the body.Forelegs are well boned, muscular and straight, set well under the withers
Proper coat is of vital importance to protect the dog while working. The coat on the face is short and smooth framed by the distinctive topknot and ears of long, loose curls. The coat on the throat is smooth forming a V-shaped patch from the back of the lower jaw behind the beard to the breastbone. The remainder of the neck, body and base of the tail are covered with dense, tight, crisp curls. The remainder of the coat on the tail is short and smooth coated. Forelegs are covered down to the feet with curls or waves all around. The hind legs are also abundantly covered with curls or waves except that the hair is short and smooth on the front of the legs below the hocks. Feet are well clothed with hair. Dogs may be shown in natural coat or trimmed. However, no dog should be groomed or trimmed so excessively as to obscure the curl or texture of the coat.
Hindquarters
Sound hindquarters are of great importance to provide drive and power while swimming. They are as high as or slightly higher than the shoulders with powerful, muscular, well-developed thighs. The hips are wide. The croup is rounded and full with the tail set on low enough to give a rounded appearance. The stifles are moderately bent. Hocks are set low and moderately bent. Balance of front and rear angulation is important. Feet: Large, round, somewhat spreading. Well clothed with hair. Pads are thick.

Description
The Irish Wolfhound is a giant-sized dog, one of the tallest breeds in the world, reaching the size of a small pony. The head is long and the skull is not too broad. The muzzle is long and somewhat pointed. The small ears are carried back against the head when the dog is relaxed and partway pricked when the dog is excited. The neck is long, strong and well arched. The chest is wide and deep. The long tail hangs down and is slightly curved. The legs are long and strong. The feet are round, with well-arched toes. The wiry, shaggy coat is rough to the touch on the head, body and legs and longer over the eyes and under the jaw. Coat colors include gray, brindle, red, black, pure white or fawn, with gray being the most common.
Temperament
Irish Wolfhounds are sweet-tempered, patient, kind, thoughtful and very intelligent. Their excellent nature can be trusted with children. Willing and eager to please, they are unconditionally loyal to their owner and family. They tend to greet everyone as a friend, so do not count on them being a watchdog, but may be a deterrent simply due to their size. This giant breed can be clumsy and are slow to mature in both body and mind, taking about two years before they are full grown. However, they grow rapidly and high-quality food is essential. While it is important to take a growing pup for daily walks for their mental well-being, hard exercise should not be forced and may be too taxing for this dog's body when it is young. Teach it not to pull on its leash before it gets too strong. The Irish Wolfhound is relatively easy to train. He responds well to firm, but gentle, consistent, leadership. This approach with plenty of canine understanding will go a long way because this dog quickly grasps what you intend. Make sure the young dog is given as much self-confidence as possible and that you are always consistent with it, so that it grows into an equable, confident dog. This calm dog gets along well with other dogs. This is also true with other animals.
Height, Weight
Height: 28 - 35 inches (71 - 90 cm)
Weight: 90 - 150 pounds (40 - 69 kg)
The Irish Wolfhound can reach up to 7 feet tall when standing on his hind legs.
Health Problems
Prone to cardiomyopathy, bone cancer, bloat, PRA, Von Willebrands, and hip dysplasia.
Living Conditions
The Irish Wolfhound is not recommended for apartment life. It is relatively inactive indoors and will do best with at least a large yard. This is a giant breed that needs some space. It may not fit well in a small or compact car.
It needs to be part of the family and would be very unhappy in a kennel. Being a sighthound, it will chase and so need a secure, fenced area for exercise.
These giant dogs need lots of space to run, but do not need any more exercise than smaller breeds. They need a daily walk where the dog is made to heel beside or behind the human holding the lead. Never in front. Like many other giant breeds it is important to remember that too much forced, vigorous exercise is not good for a young dog's growth and development, so watch your puppy for any signs, but they still instinctually need a daily walk.
Life Expectancy
Litter Size
Varies greatly about 2 to 12 puppies
The rough, medium-length coat needs regular and thorough grooming with a brush and comb. This with keep the coat in good condition. About once or twice a year pluck the coat to remove excess dead hair. This breed is an average shedder.
The Irish Wolfhound's name originates from is use as a wolf hunter, and not from its appearance. This is a very old breed with Roman records dating as far back as 391 AD. They were used in wars, and for guarding herds and property and for hunting Irish elk, deer, boar and wolves. They were held in such high esteem that battles were fought over them. Irish Wolfhounds were often given as royal presents. Boar and wolf became extinct in Ireland and as a result the Irish Wolfhound declined in population. A British army officer by the name of Captain George Graham bred them in the second half of the 19th century. The breed was restored by the introduction of Great Dane and Deerhound blood. The Irish Wolfhound Club was founded in 1885 and it was recognized by the AKC in 1897. In 1902 a hound was first presented to the Irish Guards as a mascot. It was recognized by the Kennel Club as a sporting breed in 1925. The Irish Wolfhound Society was founded in 1981.
