Fleece pullover hund
I made this pull-on sweater for my dog to wear while laying around camp after a wet day of hiking. The design features a band collar (mock turtleneck type), large leg holes for free movement, and a shirt tail to cover the rump.
Although the pattern can be scaled to fit your dog and fleece is stretchy, the tube-type construction of this sweater makes it hard to put on and take off of large dogs. This pattern is more suited to medium-sized and smaller dogs. For larger dogs, I suggest using a coat-style pattern that lays like a blanket across the back and closes with straps under the tummy and across the chest. Look in Other Resources for such a pattern. Many of the sweaters for greyhounds have this type of construction.
This pattern fits a 40 lb short-haired female mixed breed with
- Neck circumference: 17"
- Girth at chest: 27"
- Waist circumference: 21"
- Body length (collar to tail): 24"
- Chest width (shoulder to shoulder): 5"
- 1 yard of polyester fleece material, 200 weight
- thread to match
- Optional: matching or contrasting lycra material for binding
Cut: One of each pattern piece
Instructions: (seam allowance is 1/4" for a plain seam or 1/2" for a top-stitched seam)
- With right sides together, stitch BACK shoulders AB to CHEST shoulders AB.
- Match BACK side CD to CHEST side CD and sew right sides together.
- Repeat 1st and 2nd steps for the other side of the sweater.
- With right sides together, fold COLLAR crosswise and sew ends EF together.
- Turn COLLAR to right side.
- With the right side out, fold COLLAR to match raw edges.
- Match COLLAR out side to sweater body right side and sew together.
- Finish the sweater with either a 1/4" or 1/2" hem or a lycra binding.
- If you are making this sweater for a male dog, you may want to make the curve deeper on the tail end of the pattern to expose more of the tummy area.
- Seam allowances are NOT included.

DIY Gift Ideas # 1:: a polar fleece poncho
About the fringe: I used masking tape to set outlines for cutting - if you want to perfect this you could even make marks on the tape to space them out evenly. I didn't go through the hassle of doing this, I didn't even bother to work myself all the way around with the scissors - I simply folded the poncho such that front and back were perfectly aligned on top of each other and I cut through both layers at once.

- sewing machine (note: depending on the machine being used, it might be useful to test the machine on a little swatch first to see how it's behaving in terms of tension and needle.)
- Pattern: make a paper pattern of a 63cm x 44cm rectangle. This includes seam allowances. This should fit an 8 – 11 year old. You can adjust the dimensions accordingly for bigger sizes (to check hold the rectangle across your body, the short end being one of the shoulder seams). Make sure to have a difference of at least 18-20cm between the width and length of the rectangle as this will determine the size of the opening of the poncho for the head.
- Cutting: fold your fabric in two, pin the pattern to both layers of fabric. Next cut your fabric. You obtain two identical rectangles.
- Assembling: (see also Fig. 1) With the right sides of the fabric facing each other, pin the short side of one rectangle to the longer side of the other. Sew with sewing machine. Do the same with the other two ends. In the middle you’ll have the opening to put your head through.
- Hemming the collar: With the right side of the poncho facing you, turn the top 1.5cm of the opening inward and do this all the way around. Pin while you’re going, to secure. Next, topstitch on the machine.
- Cutting the fringe: place your poncho in front of you such that front and back are perfectly aligned on top of each other. That way, you’ll be able to cut through both layers of fabric. Now, using some masking tape, define the size of the fringe you want (6cm in the poncho shown). Start with an incision at the center tip, and than gradually shift over the next couple of incisions until it becomes perpendicularly upon the tape. Then continue to cut parallel on both sides, left and right from the center tip.
- Optional: you can further decorate the poncho, using ribbons, buttons, appliqué, sequins, embroidery… Use your imagination!

grea poncho deffenetely gonna make my girls one.
Any advice on how to make this for a toddler? I think I need a 22cm short side, so that'd be 31.5cm long side. Will that make the head opening too small?

Either the dimensions are wrong or the instructions are but this does not create a head hole big enough for my 4 yo, let alone an 8-10 yo.
Sigh. Everything looks cuter on kids. Haha. Going to do this one with nieces.

I am looking for a site that had something about baby pj's you can use that for your little dog for her pj's i guess there is some adjustement to be made,I cant afford to buy them full price but i can go to a buck or two for baby'pj's and do adjustment
How do you cut the leg openings in knit hats and keep it from raveling in all directions?
Pat, i don't have your email and so i will to reply to you here. anyways, i sewed lacearound the armholes to prevent the knit from running. you can notice in the photo(s) at the top of the tutorial.
Love this idea! My Havanese (when he's groomed) gets chilly in winter.
