Podenco, Greyhound & Galgo

Dies und Das

Seit 1997 befasse ich mich mit der Rasse des Podenco, später kamen der Galgo und Greyhound dazu. Ich habe keinen eigenen Verein, bin lediglich eine engagierte Privatperson, wodurch meine Möglichkeiten begrenzt sind.

Ich vermittle selbst keine Hunde und habe auch keine Auffangmöglichkeiten oder Pflegestellen.

Durch die Erfahrungen mit Dunya, meiner eigenen Podenca, und Kontakten mit anderen Podencomenschen – u.a. durch Herausgabe der „Kleinen Podencozeitung“ bis 2010 - habe ich viel über diese Rasse gelernt. Ein Podencokenner bin ich jedoch nicht. Ich denke, dass das auch fast unmöglich ist, denn einen Podenco lernt man nie ganz kennen; er überrascht uns immer wieder. Auch das macht diese Rasse so interessant.

Warum diese Website?

Leider passiert es immer wieder, dass Leute mit den besten Absichten einen Podenco aufnehmen, ohne eine Ahnung zu haben, WEN sie sich da ins Haus holen. Das kann passieren, weil Leute selbst einen Podenco aus dem Spanienurlaub mitbringen, ohne zu wissen, welcher Rasse dieser Hund angehört, aber auch weil der vermittelnde Verein die Leute nicht oder unzulänglich über die Rasse informiert.

Und wer ist dann im Endeffekt der Dumme? Natürlich der Hund.

Ich bin gewiss nicht dafür, um soviel wie möglich Hunde aus Spanien in die Niederlande und nach Deutschland zu holen ohne gute Vorbereitung.

Es braucht also nicht erst im eigenen Land alles 'perfekt' zu sein, bevor man ins Nachbarland schaut, ob es sich nun um Menschen oder um Tiere handelt. Ich bin darum nicht für ein entweder - oder, sondern für ein sowohl als auch.

Tipps für ein möglichst stressfreies Sylvester

Das habe ich gern getan und möchte Ihnen ihre Tipps ans Herz legen, vor allem da diese in vielen Punkten abweichen von dem, was u.a. manche Tierärzte empfehlen.

Hilfe für den Hund am Sylvestertag – oder:

Ist die Menschheit verrückt geworden?!

Immer wieder stellt man mir die Frage, ob ich mich da auskenne. Oh ja, da kenne ich mich sogar sehr gut aus, denn drei meiner sieben Hunde haben schreckliche Angst und zwei fürchten sich zumindest etwas.

Das müssen Sie allerdings rechtzeitig tun, denn einsame Berghütten gibt`s bei weitem nicht so viele wie genervte Hundehalter, die diese zur Jahreswende händeringend suchen. Reisen Sie schon ein paar Tage vor Sylvester ab und bleiben Sie auch etwas länger, denn wie wir alle wissen, beginnt die Knallerei schon Tage vor dem ganz großen Spektakel und zieht sich auch noch bis zum zweiten oder dritten Januar hin.

Allerdings sollten Sie andererseits auch keinesfalls – wie von manchen Trainern empfohlen – Ihren Hund ignorieren, wenn er Angst hat. Dieser Tipp, der die oben genannte „unbewusste Bestätigung“ verhindern soll, ist weit über das Ziel hinaus geschossen, denn wenn Sie Ihren Hund ignorieren, wenn er Angst hat, was vermitteln Sie ihm dann?! Dass Ihnen seine Angst vollständig egal ist und er sich an jemand anderen wenden muss, wenn er Unterstützung und Schutz braucht – und das ist für eine gute Bindung und ein angestrebtes Vertrauensverhältnis zwischen Hund und Halter das reinste Gift! Deshalb haben wir seit Jahren ein Ritual eingeführt, das bestens funktioniert:

Vor ein paar Jahren wurde ich am Sylvesterabend von einer völlig verzweifelten Hundehalterin angerufen, bei deren Eurasierer-Rüden genau das passiert war. Der Hund drehte völlig durch, speichelte, raste fieberhaft nach Unterschlupf suchend durch das Haus und war kaum noch ansprechbar. Die Tierärztin, die das Mittel verschrieben hatte, empfahl am Telefon, den Hund in die Praxis zu bringen, was vollkommen ausgeschlossen war für die Halterin, weil er sich nicht einmal mehr anfassen ließ, ohne deutlich drohend zu fletschen – was er übrigens sonst nie tat! Als ich nach halbstündiger Fahrt dort ankam, war der Hund bereits so durchgedreht, dass ich einen Kreislaufkollaps befürchtete. Uns blieb also nichts anderes übrig, als uns auf den Hund zu stürzen, ihn – halb im Würgegriff – ins Auto zu zerren und in die Klinik meines Vertrauens zu bringen. Dort wurde er in Narkose gelegt, um ihn erst einmal ruhig zu stellen. Dann wurde er an den Tropf gehängt, um die Wirkstoffe in seinem Körper möglichst schnell auszuschwemmen.

Es dauerte mehr als 14 Tage, ehe dieser Hund sich halbwegs erholt hatte und sein Frauchen und mich wieder vertrauensvoll an sich heran ließ. Er war damals fünf Jahre alt und ich kannte ihn seit seiner Welpenzeit. Er hatte uneingeschränktes Vertrauen zu mir und seiner Halterin bis zu diesem Abend gehabt.

Gefangen im eigenen Körper konnte er weder hecheln, noch herumlaufen oder sich verkriechen, so wie er es sonst immer getan hatte. Die Folgen waren fatal – dieser Hund erlitt ein Trauma, von dem er sich nie mehr richtig erholte. Er hatte für den Rest seines Lebens Probleme und die Halterin verfluchtete den Tag, an dem er das „Beruhigungsmittel“ bekommen hatte.

Steckt man nun diesen Stecker in die Steckdose, wird der Geruch der Pheromone ausgeströmt. Wichtig ist hierbei allerdings, dass Sie dem Hund die Gelegenheit geben, den Raum zu verlassen, wenn er das wünscht, denn nicht alle Hunde mögen diesen Geruch und nicht auf alle wirkt er beruhigend! Beobachten Sie Ihren Hund, ob er sich freiwillig in die Nähe des Steckers begibt und tatsächlich ruhiger wird oder ob ihm dieser Geruch völlig egal zu sein scheint oder er sogar den Raum verlässt.

Dennoch wird Ihr Hund gerne lernen und es Ihnen recht machen, wenn Sie ihm die Möglichkeit dazu geben.

Er muss erst lernen, was Sie von ihm erwarten. Und Ihre Belohnung für alle Zeit, Geduld und Verständnis für seine Vergangenheit, wird ein wundervoller Hausgenosse und wahrer Freund sein.

Außerdem ist es gut möglich, dass so mancher Mitbewohner dieses Hundes die Notwendigkeit, viel mit ihm zu arbeiten, gar nicht erst verspürt, weil der Hund auch ohne viel Training meist schon ein sehr angenehmer Hausgenosse ist.

Einfach gesagt: Verhalten, das belohnt wird, wird wiederholt. Verhalten, das dem Hund keinen Vorteil bringt, gewöhnt er sich nach und nach wieder ab. Nach einer Weile, in der auf dieses Verhalten keine Belohnung folgt, (Essen, Aufmerksamkeit oder was immer Ihr Hund auch als Belohnung erfährt), ebbt dies Verhalten von selbst ab.

Auf jeden Fall sollte die Erziehung mit sanfter Hand geschehen, durch positive Verstärkung des gewünschten Verhaltens. Um lernen zu können, muss der Hund entspannt sein und für neue Eindrücke offen stehen. Strafe führt zu Stress oder sogar Angst.

Ein gestresster Hund KANN nicht lernen. Daraus ergibt sich, dass die beste Methode um Ihren Hund zu erziehen, die Methode ist, bei der gewünschtes Verhalten belohnt wird.

Der Vorteil des Clickers ist, dass Sie den Moment der Belohnung ganz genau bestimmen können und das gewünschte Verhalten Ihres Hundes sozusagen auf die Sekunde genau ´einkapseln´ können, wodurch der Hund genau weiß, WELCHES Verhalten denn nun belohnt wurde, was dem Training natürlich sehr zugute kommt. Auch wird absolut kein Druck auf den Hund ausgeübt. Er muss selbst herausbekommen, welches Verhalten man erwartet. Besonders für Hunde, die schnell ängstlich oder gestresst sind, ist dies eine ideale und sehr entspannte Trainings- und Lehrmethode.

Löst er sich an der von Ihnen gewünschten Stelle, loben Sie ihn ausgiebig! Ein 'Unglück' im Haus sollten Sie ignorieren; wischen Sie es auf und reagieren weiter nicht darauf. Der Hund weiß noch nicht, was von ihm verlangt wird und würde Strafe absolut nicht verstehen.

Die meisten Hunde sind jedoch sehr schnell stubenrein. Sie sind intelligent genug, um zu wissen, was man von ihnen erwartet, und außerdem besonders empfänglich für Belohnung in der Form von preisenden Worten und Leckerchen.

Eine gute Methode, um den Hund an das Alleinsein zu gewöhnen, ist folgende: Sie verlassen das Zimmer, lassen die Tür aber offen, sodass er Sie sehen kann, und geben ihm den Befehl zu ´bleiben´(siehe weiter unten). Nach ein paar Sekunden kommen Sie zurück und belohnen den Hund sehr fröhlich.

Wichtig: Folgt Ihnen der Hund trotzdem, bitte nicht böse reagieren! Wenn Sie böse auf ihn werden, dann strafen Sie ihn dafür, dass er zu Ihnen kommt, und das sollten Sie niemals tun. Bringen Sie ihn einfach ruhig zurück an seinen Platz, ohne mit ihm zu sprechen, und versuchen Sie die Übung noch einmal auf etwas kürzerem Abstand auszuführen. Seien Sie kreativ!

Umgang mit anderen Haust ieren

Da der Greyhound meist ein Leben auf der Rennbahn hinter sich hat (siehe auch der Greyhound in Spanien) und dadurch nur an Hunde seiner Rasse gewöhnt ist, kann es bei ihm etwas länger dauern, ihn auch an fremde Hunderassen zu gewöhnen. Aber auch der Greyhound ist fast nie aggressiv. Es kann jedoch sein, dass Sie beim Kontakt mit kleinen Hunden ein wenig aufpassen müssen, da sie für 'Beutetiere' angesehen werden können, besonders, wenn sie rennen.

Meine Erfahrung mit Bonita, einer Greyhoundhündin, die mit 5 Jahren von der Rennbahn in Barcelona zu mir kam:

So vermeiden Sie, dass sie wegrennt und so den Jagdtrieb des Hundes anstachelt. Außerdem kann auf die Art nichts passieren. Beide Tiere können sich aus sicherem Abstand an den gegenseitigen Geruch gewöhnen.

Sie sollten allerdings in der Nähe bleiben. Denn wenn der Hund bellend vor dem Käfig steht und die Katze panisch vor Angst wird, aber nicht flüchten kann, trägt das natürlich nicht dazu bei, dass die beiden später Freunde werden.

Ich habe diesen Trick des Öfteren praktiziert, aber meine persönliche Erfahrung ist, dass es absolut nichts bringt. Außerdem riecht Ihr ganzes Haus und Ihre Kleidung doch schon nach Katze. Dieser Geruch wird der feinen Hundenase sicherlich nicht entgehen.

Im Allgmeinen kann man diesen Hunden jedoch recht gut beibringen, dass alles, was im Hause ist, zur Familie gehört.

Dennoch sollten Sie auf Katzen draußen aufpassen. Denn eine Katze im Hause oder draußen, ist für die meisten Hunde ein großer Unterschied. Auch auf Ihre eigene Katze kann der Hund im Garten anders reagieren als im Haus!

Dieses Verhalten ist selbst-belohnend, denn wenn sie den Abfalleimer offen haben, erwartet sie eine tolle Belohnung in Form Ihrer Mahlzeitreste oder leckerer Knochen.

Wichtig: Um Erfolg mit dieser Übung zu haben, ist es notwendig, dem Hund keine Gelegenheit zu geben, um seine Aktion erfolgreich abzuschließen, am liebsten schon beim ersten Versuch. Also sorgen Sie dafür, dass schon sein erster Versuch scheitert. Denn wenn er erst einmal gelernt hat, dass seine Aktionen Erfolg haben (= er eine Belohnung bekommt), dann ist es viel schwieriger, ihm das Verhalten wieder ab zugewöhnen.

Die Treppe herunterlaufen ist meist schwieriger für den Hund, da ja dann sein ganzes Gewicht auf die Gelenke der Vorderpfoten kommt. Sie können ihn das aber auf die gleiche Art lehren. Begleiten Sie den Hund ganz ruhig und halten Sie ihn vorläufig noch an der Leine, sodass er nicht die Treppe herunter fallen kann.

Sitz, Platz und Bleib

Auch hierbei kann der Clicker ein ausgezeichnetes Hilfsmittel sein. Wie bei jeder Übung, ist auch hier der ruhige Aufbau sehr wichtig. Erst klicken (und belohnen) Sie z. B. eine Pfote auf der Decke, dann zwei Pfoten usw. Dann wenn der Hund ganz auf der Decke steht und zum Schluss wenn er darauf liegt. Es dauert sicherlich etwas länger als die ´traditionelle' Methode, aber ich kann es wirklich empfehlen.

Bei all dem gilt jedoch was ich schon am Anfang sagte: Erwarten Sie keinen sklavischen Gehorsam! Der Windhund ist die ´Katze´unter den Hunden.

Is the Galgo Español Right For You?

The Galgo Español will do okay in an apartment if it gets enough exercise. It is relatively inactive indoors and a small yard will do. Greyhounds are sensitive to the cold but do well in cold climates as long as they wear a coat outside. Do not let this dog off the leash unless in a safe area. They have a strong chase instinct and if they spot an animal such as a rabbit they just might take off. They are so fast you will not be able to catch them.

Description

Galgos are similar in appearance to Greyhounds, but are distinctly different in their conformation. Galgos are higher in the rear than in the front, and have flatter muscling than a Greyhound, which is characteristic of endurance runners. They also tend to be smaller, lighter in build, have longer tails and have a very long, streamlined head that gives the impression of larger ears. Their chests are not as deep as a Greyhound’s and should not reach the point of the elbow

A male Galgo measures on average 25 to28 inches and weighs around 60 to 65 pounds, the female 23 to26 inches and weighs around 50 to 55 pounds.

But keep in mind, these are averages and we have seen taller (31 inches), smaller, heavier and lighter(36 pounds) galgos.

The coats range from short hair (like that of a greyhound), to varying degrees of long and wirehair coats, as seen in the Scottish deerhound and other sighthounds. Outside of sunny Spain, they require a warm coat to keep them warm in cold winter weather: like all greyhound type breeds, they have little body fat and short coats, so extra warmth is preferred for colder climates.

Short History of the Galgo Español

Sighthounds — dogs that hunt by sight — have existed since ancient times. Different types of sighthounds have developed in different countries depending on the terrain and quarry. The Galgo is a Spanish sighthound created to course hare and rabbit. His name comes from the Latin “canis gallicus,” meaning Celtic dog. The Galgo probably descends from Greyhound-type dogs that were influenced by Salukis during the Moorish conquest of Spain.

The Galgo is rare in the United States and is not recognized by the American Kennel Club or the United Kennel Club. The dogs may participate in lure coursing events through the American Sighthound Field Association.

Temperament

The Galgo Español shows typical characteristics of a sighthound. At home, a Galgo behaves relative calmly and unobtrusively. Galgos bark very rarely. He saves his energy and his Spanish fire for the outside walks. They are calm, quiet, gentle and laid back; happy to sleep their day away on their backs on a sofa.

More than 90% of Galgos can be considered cat-friendly and are therefore an ideal choice for the hound lover who also owns cats. Almost all Galgos are also friendly towards other dogs and small dogs. Galgos are also very good with children, being calm in the house so there is less risk of a child being knocked over or jumped on than with a more excitable breed. They are very gentle and tolerate the often over-enthusiastic attentions of children with little risk of retaliation from the dog. Galgos have a very reserved personality and they have a tendency towards shyness, so it is very important that they be socialized early in life so that they grow up to be comfortable around strange people, dogs and locations.

Caring for Your Galgo Español

General Health

Because there are so few of them, little is known about the Galgo Español’s health. In general, he appears to be a healthy breed. He may suffer muscle or toe injuries while running. Osteosarcoma, or bone cancer, is seen in sighthound breeds, so it is something to keep in mind. A reputable breeder will discuss potential health problems with you, including any problems she has seen in her own lines.

Remember that after you’ve taken a new puppy into your home, you have the power to protect him from one of the most common health problems: obesity. Keeping a Galgo Espanol at an appropriate weight is one of the easiest ways to extend his life. Make the most of your preventive abilities to help ensure a healthier dog for life.

Like many other sighthounds, Galgos are a fairly healthy breed although they are sensitive to anaesthesia. As such, proper care should be taken by the owner to ensure that the attending veterinarian is aware of this issue. Although Galgos are big dogs, their history of selection as a working sighthound, their light weight, and their anatomy keep them safe from hip dysplasia. These dogs must run regularly to keep in perfect health, combined with their characteristic tendency to sleep all the rest of the day.

Grooming & Bathing

The smooth, shorthaired coat is easy to groom. Comb and brush with a firm bristle brush, and dry shampoo only when necessary. This breed is an average shedder. Cut nails as needed.

Exercise & Training

This breed needs to be taken on a daily long walk or jog, where the dog is made to heel beside or behind the person holding the lead, as instinct tells a dog the leader leads the way, and that leader needs to be the human.

Put on the computer what the public asks for, not everything about the US.

I asked for a total medal count. I have been looking for 20 minutes and still cannot find it.

I also asked for a specific medal count for a specific country and got a history of when they first started to compete in the Olympics. I asked for a medal count for 2018, as of today,

not a history of that country.

A written declaration is a text of a maximum of 200 words relating exclusively on a matter falling within the competence of the European Union. They do not, however, bind Parliament, that is, they cannot be considered as an act of the Parliament representing its position, but only those of its authors and signatories.

Save the Galgo - Stop the suffering

Olivenza Perrera, Badajoz - Auschwitz for Galgos - and still the hunters deny any cruelty to galgos!!

The Hunting season in Spain is about to begin - for 'hunting' read also 'coursing'. The poor rejected galgos and podencos from the 2010 season are still arriving in perreras across Spain for killing, or being abandoned and injured in road accidents.

The Hunting Federations deny there is any cruelty connected with their members' treatment of their galgos. They claim that all the scaremongering is because of 'animal rights' people lying. They continue to stick their heads up their a. s and ignore the fact that photos and videos abound on the Internet to prove a lie to their claims.

The hunters that use Galgo´s for catching hares, deny or lie about all the horrible, sad and sick things that have been done to the poor dogs.. They say they´re biggest Galgo lovers, that couldn´t abandon a dog that they raised, fed and cared for. They say they´re expensive dogs, that it would be stupid to sacrafice something that´s worth so much. That the rate of abandoned Galgo´s is wrong. They say far fewer Galgos are killed, abandoned and in shelters..

But the real answers are shown in the video.. and it´s the opposite as what the hunters say.. The video is made in a Spanish shelter, called a killing-station.. The dogs are brought there by their owners, the hunters themselves.. The dogs that are there receive no food and medical care, because in a short period they will be killed.. So why spend money on these dogs.. The video is made after the 2010 hunting season ended and most of the dogs thre are Galgos and a few other hunting dogs.. Starving, scared, wounded.. Some more dead than alive.. Waiting to be killed..

The cheapest method they use paralyses the dog; it takes on average 20 minutes for a dog to die.

And the circle of life continous.. More Galgos will be born.. others will be killed.. The hunters want to create the best ones for the hunt, the others are worth nothing.. And after not being useful to hunt anymore, they will be dumped, mistreated or killed in the most sickening ways.. The sad destiny of the Galgo.. When does it stop?'

Olivenza Perrera is in Badajoz, Extremadura. It is a privately owned killing station, and very difficult for anyone to get inside to film what goes on in there - you now see why. There is a section about it in my book From Heaven to Hell - The Story of the Galgo Espanol. One lady arranged to adopt a dog from there, when she went back the following day, the dog had been killed. It has a terrible reputation throughout Spain.

Not all perreras are as bad as this - I was contacted by a Spanish man in a municipal perrera who wanted to save the 4 galgos there, and appealed to me to get them out, he was even willing to drive up to the Spanish/French border with them. So please remember on behalf of the volunteers and people in Spain, there are many who do care and try to save some of the dogs in the killing stations. But sadly not in Olivenza.

Some dogs in these photos had been in the killing station for 2 weeks, starved and dehydrated, on death row.

this must definitely stop! and if they have even a proof, a video, which is in no way to be discarded as a fabrication, how can they still keep on lying? And their lies being accepted? I am still shocked and have to pinch myself we are living in 21st century, as those kind of things do definitely not portray a progress, a new millennium? those barbarian acts say just the opposite. We really have nothing better to amuse ourselves, but taking pleasure in torturing those who cannot fight back? It is disgusting no doubt about that, and it is up to to government to address this important issue surely.

That animal organisations are facing difficulties in protesting against 'corridas" or bull fighting is one thing, there goes the defence of the 'tradition' and is tough reasoning with the authorities.

But what is the excuse here??

This goes beyond my comprehension really. I do write this because just reading about it upsets me and cant believe it can be allowed and nothing can be done against that. Unfortunately I do live very far a way (expatriated in Bangladesh) so all I can add is my opinion and sometime a financial aid. i am sure if I was living in the country where that is going on, I would have been physically involved fighting the injustice.

I do my bit here in Bangladesh, trying to home few dogs, try to get treatments for injured animals, and it is very difficult but possible at least to help some.

Anyway, I hope something will change, I hope the people going against this issue will be finally heard and things might change. I do hope so with all my heart.

so many people share. If you purchase a copy of my book, it will explain to some

extent how the situation has arisen and the difficulty in getting changes made

to bring it to an end. Catalunya has banned bullfighting, there will be no

bullfighting in Barcelona now, so that is a start. But it is a long uphill

struggle, changing the mindset of a culture in which respect for animals is zero

amongst so many. But the valiant volunteers in Spain who work to help the

abused animals -dogs, cats, horses, donkeys - are amazing people and do

what they can to improve the situation. Unfortunately, corruption plays a

major part - and hunters will always look after their own, through the legal

system which should be used to stamp out cruelty.
